The Dangers of Work Related Injuries

Work related or occupational injuries can happen at any time.  Regardless of safety measures in place, common injuries at work still occur.  While some work-related injuries can be prevented, some will occur even when you are practicing workplace safety.

Common injuries at work include things like:

  • Getting caught in machinery
  • Falls from ladders or other high places
  • Slips, falls, and trips at ground level
  • Impacts and being struck by objects
  • Traffic accidents
  • Injuries to knees and ankles
  • Overexertion from lifting, pulling, and carrying
  • Injuries to the neck, shoulders, and back

Repetitive stress is a major concern as often people will go for a period of time without realizing that they have an injury.  When you sit at a desk with poor posture or lift objects with improper technique, you are hard on your body.  Though the stress causes issues daily you may not notice it or treat it as an injury until it has become worse.  What starts out as acute pain may become chronic if it is not treated.

Musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) and repetitive motion injuries (RMIs) do not stem from one thing but rather a culmination of factors.  Factors at work that are a risk for MSIs are:

  • Poor posture
  • Forceful or repetitive hand movements
  • Fast-paced work environments

Our bodies are designed to move, so being sedentary for long periods of time can be damaging to the musculoskeletal system.  It requires muscle effort to hold the body upright or seated for long periods at a desk.  Reduced blood flow will bring on fatigue and the musculoskeletal system will be more vulnerable to RMIs.

Not every desk/workstation is created equal.  It is important to have an adjustable work station or one that has been measured for the user.  Depending on the job, workers will have different needs at their station.  Workers also have different builds and body types that will require various features at a work area so that they can sit properly and comfortably to perform the job.  If poor working habits are not corrected there is a far greater chance of suffering chronic pain conditions associated to stress on the body at the work place.

A fast-paced work environment will also contribute to work place injuries.  When you are under pressure to complete work on a timeline, you have less recovery time for your muscles between tasks.  This increased the risk of developing RMIs.  Often, external factors increase the pace at which work must be completed and this increases stress on the body.

The United States Department of Labor helps to ensure that workers know their rights which can help keep you safe at work.  “Under federal law, you are entitled to a safe workplace.”  If you have any concerns about safety on the job you have the right to request changes or ask questions without fear of retaliation.
